At our November meeting, Peter Roberts gave an insight into his role as the Referee Development Officer at Manchester FA.During the course of the evening, Peter covered a number of topics of interest to members and guests, including:
- Recruitment of new referees
- Retention of existing referees
- Developing all referees within Manchester FA
- the Respect initiative.
Starting with recruitment, Peter informed us that MFA had trained over 100 new referees since the beginning of the present season, meaning that the county has around 470 referees. The basic referees course is now a far more structured and focussed element of training, with an induction evening, two days of practical training sessions followed by an exam evening. Candidates thn have to complete six 11-a-side games and attend a call back evening before becoming a fully registered referees.
