George's Annual Quiz

This month, in our traditional end to the calendar year, George Fawkes brings his annual quiz to the fore - asking a variety of sporting questions to members and guests.

There's guaranteed to be a suitable amount of festive fun and a mixed bag of tempting teasers to get our brains into action, including a mix of the bizarre and the out-right ludicrous!

Peter Roberts shows the way forward in Manchester

Peter Roberts at our November meeting At our November meeting, Peter Roberts gave an insight into his role as the Referee Development Officer at Manchester FA.During the course of the evening, Peter covered a number of topics of interest to members and guests, including:

Recruitment of new referees
Retention of existing referees
Developing all referees within Manchester FA
the Respect initiative.

Starting with recruitment, Peter informed us that MFA had trained over 100 new referees since the beginning of the present season, meaning that the county has around 470 referees. The basic referees course is now a far more structured and focussed element of training, with an induction evening, two days of practical training sessions followed by an exam evening. Candidates thn have to complete six 11-a-side games and attend a call back evening before becoming a fully registered referees.

Ray helps to get the right decisions

Ray Olivier at our October meeting At our October meeting, FA Regional Manager for the Midlands Ray Olivier was our guest and he took us through a fantastic evening looking at a series of match incidents. Highlighting the importance of knowing the laws and keeping up to date with them and of alertness and awareness, Ray had members and guests enthralled for over an hour and a half.

Using clips from a series of games and across a multitude of levels - including the Equadorial Premier League, Euro 2008, the Football League and down to supply league - Ray also passed on several useful tips and trick to help us all with our refereeing.

Eddie ensures a greater understanding

Eddie Lomas presenting At our September meeting, Eccles RA President Eddie Lomas gave a tremendous presentation to ensure members and guests had a full and proper understanding of the offside law.

Beginning with a brief look at the wording of Law 11, Eddie reminded members that it is vital to re-visit the law book regularly to ensure that we are fully up-to-date with the current situation.
